3 - Adding components to the circuit

For the Basic kit, there's a handful of components to add. Start with the two resistors. Take care not to get them mixed up: the 1.2k resistor connects to the positive side of the power supply, and the 10-ohm resistor connects to the negative side of the power supply.

   

Next, on the same side of the breadboard, add the 100nF capacitor. One end goes into the same row of holes as pin 5 of the chip and the other goes into the same row of holes as the 10-ohm resistor.

   

So far, the three components we've added have no polarity - it doesn't matter which way around we connect them. But the next part - one of the 330uF capacitors - does have a polarity. Look closely and you'll see one side of the capacitor's body has a negative sign - indicating that this terminal must be connected towards the negative side of the power supply. In this picture (below) it's the side that's closest to the camera.

   

Trim the leads and push this capacitor into the holes shown here. Double-check: the positive lead is in the same row as pin 5 of the chip.

Power supply capacitors
At the top corner of the breadboard, there are two capacitors to insert. First, add the tiny 47nF ceramic capacitor, and then the second 330uF capacitor. The ceramic capacitor has no polarity and you can fit it either way around, but the 330uF must be fitted so that its negative terminal is connected to the negative (black) side of the power supply.

   

The final capacitor to add is the 4.7nF input capacitor. This is the first component that your guitar's signal encounters, just before the signal enters pin 3 of the chip. Bend and trim its leads so that you can fit it to the holes shown here.

Adding the LED
Now get the red LED, and take a look at the leads. One is longer than the other, and this is a sign that this component is also polarised, and so it must go into the circuit in one direction. Start by trimming the leads, but to help you, make sure that you keep the longer one very slightly longer than the short lead.

   
   

Now place it in this position on the board, making sure that the shorter lead goes into the black (negative) row, as shown here.

   

Then push it into the board.

Unused space on the board
Don't worry that there are some unused spaces on the breadboard. We will use those later: some of the space is required for the Plus version's extra circuitry and some space is useful for future modifications (such as the 3.5mm audio input). Keep an eye on this section of the InfoCentre for updates on those.
