At the moment, a lack of time to administer a forum means that I can't run one myself, but there are so many useful and friendly guitar amp forums around the web that maybe there's no real need.

The posts below contain links to some of those that I've used in the past. Chatting to other builders and seeing how people have devised new circuits, modified existing circuits and solved problems is a great way of getting ideas for your own amps.

AX84 was one of the first forums I ever joined, and I built one of the High Octane projects way back. It's very friendly and you can browse the threads and projects without having to sign up to the forum itself.

The 18W forum was another of the sites that got me started. It's a lot more focused than many amp building forums - it's all about the Marshall 18W circuit, but also covers the original WEM Dominator circuit and many types of 18W (Lite, SuperLite TMB, 36W, etc).

At the time I write this, there has been some forum malfunction that means it's not possible to sign up: "NEW UPDATE 4-25-2011: The 18Watt site is down for an upgrade so we are not adding any new members until the upgrade is complete. At that time, I hope that registration will be automated with adequate protection to keep out the scammers. Please check back over the next few days. I will post a notice here with instructions for new prospective members."

Hopefully, this will be rectified soon, because it's a great forum with many helpful contributors, modificatin suggestions, clips, downloads, etc.

Associated with the 18W forum mentioned above are a range of 'sister' forums:

* (for single-ended amps in general)

* (for push-pull amps in general

* (for Bassman/JTM projects)

* (for general amp building)

Like the 18W forum, all of these require you to join before you can view the forum. Not ideal, but one sign-in covers all four forums.

There used to be a community site called 'Ampage.' It ran on quite klunky software and was a great place for general chat about amp building and amp fixing. The archived info is still there (and well worth bookmarking for future reference) at:

The good news is that the forum was recreated with newer and better software. Have a look here:

Now it has even more members and an incredible amount of amp building information. No need to register to browse the forums!
